The Certificate in Proficiency in English provides students with a strong foundation in English that will enable them to advance their studies in Higher Education. The Proficiency in English programme is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced courses at Informatics centres or to improve their English in a social or business context. It will bridge the differences in skills and knowledge set between students with diverse educational backgrounds, including those whose first language is not English.

The Starter level is meant for students who do not possess any English language skills whatsoever. This module is meant to instil basic knowledge pertaining to the English language, such as the alphabet, greeting words, numbers, months of the year and days of the week, etc.It focuses on listening and reading, with some pronunciation as well. It seeks to serve as a bridge between using only the student’s mother tongue in academic environments, to using English only. It supports students to overcome the difficulties of learning a second language. The module seeks to help students get a good grasp of English in order to be able to attend classes of ENG100, which are conducted by an English speaking teacher. The module is based on the New Headway English Course Beginner. This series of textbooks adopts a multi-media approach, including audio, video, blackboard, and interactive whiteboard audio approaches.

Students who have other relevant qualifications may be given exemptions, subject to prevailing rules and regulations of Informatics Academy. Students may be required to undertake an entrance test to assess his competency and depending on their score, they may be granted exemption in some courses. Students may be required to take Placement Tests to assess their standard of English to determine the level they could be enrolled.
