The BA (Hons) Product Design courses aim specifically to equip students with the knowledge, skills and understanding, as well as the contacts and networking experience, to establish themselves as design professionals. Through strong industry links and professionally relevant projects, briefs and simulated working practices, these courses will offer students the best possible advantages for fostering a career in the product design industries. Apart from international case studies, students are exposed to Asian culture and will integrate their own identity which will reflect their choice of design solutions.
Changes in technology, communications and commerce since that time have redefined product design, development and manufacture the world over. Research and design are now commonly carried out at a remote distance from engineering and manufacture. Marketing may be implemented in a third location. The introduction of almost unlimited variability within manufacturing now offers the possibility of a large number of one-off or small batches of designs being offered for sale. Issues of sustainability, environmental and social impacts have also developed quickly and strongly over the period since the last review. The course is taught through a portfolio approach to the preparation and selection of design project work for assessment, the introduction of specialist product design skills modules, 3D printing and milling technologies and explicit study in the concepts of sustainability. Most modules will include opportunities to experience a range of starting points and outcomes; this choice-element permits students to experiment with and encounter a varied ‘diet’ of possibilities adding to their professional portfolios.
Students will be able to draw from wide source of projects in Asia, participate in competitions and collaborative projects and work in multidisciplinary teams. This will increase their global employability and prepare them to launch their own business.
